Review of Ocean's Eleven (1960) by Richard D — 01 Aug 2016
The original Rat Pack film. Sinatra is Danny Ocean, sergeant of a squad of paratroopers during WWII. He reunites his men to rob 5 casinos in Las Vegas on New Years Eve. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr,. Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop .
.. all the expected faces are there, joined by the likes of Henry Silva, Richard Conte and Norman Fell. The plan goes well until Conte drops dead right after the heist. This clues Lawford's mom's fiance Cesar Romero, a gangster, onto Sinatra's group.
This film was mostly shot in the early mornings after many of the participants had performed their act on the strip all night. It feels like that. This might be one of the loosest, most informal heist films ever made.
Your enjoyment will probably be tied to how much you enjoy the early 60's Vegas culture. Personally, I love it and I love this film.
