Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by Charlotte N — 09 Jun 2018
This is a pretty straight down the line heist film that didn't set my hair on fire, sadly. Lots of big names but not much in the way of characterisation. I was actually quite disappointed in the way it carbon copied Ocean's 11 (a bit a la The Force Awakens, but it was more noticeable here).
Cate Blanchette is extemely underused. The whole cast really is just a set of poker faces. It's passable, for sure, but it's like they didn't know how to play it, and so made something quite stiff in an effort to go safe.
Plus a heap of the "technical" aspects of the heist were really overcome either a) exremely easily or b) without the pleasure of seeing how it was done. That's kinda extracting the pleasure from heist.
Again, trying to be safe, lest the rediculous plot points come under too much scrutiny. Safe is about it, really.
