Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by Terese O — 10 Jun 2018
Fun! I never understood the appeal of the Oceans franchise before, even if George Clooney was charming and Andy Garcia made a hot bad guy. I just didn't care whether a random bunch of guys pulled off a robbery.
It turns out that even though I don't care whether a random bunch of women do either, as a woman I find these characters easier to identify with and therefore more interesting. The characters are varied, with different levels of quirkiness, glamor, and badassery.
And -- wow -- I love the clothes! It was like a fashion magazine with a plot, and I mean that in a good way. This is not an "important" or meaningful movie, but most movies aren't -- it's sleek, silly fun.
I would definitely go to a sequel. BTW, Rihanna turns out to be one of those singers who, like Cher, is a natural actress, at least in certain roles. She has few lines but does a lot with the role anyway -- she's funny, savvy, and very cool.
