Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by Cork B — 21 Jun 2018
Disclaimer - I don't particularly enjoy heist films. I have no empathy for the characters generally, and here they do even less than Ocean's 11 to try and make Bullock, and by extension, her crew, more sympathy worthy.
The setup is very similar to 11 - the wronged con(girl) plots an elaborate heist for money... and revenge. The partner warns against it. They do it anyway. SPOILER ALERT - It works and they all walk away with a bunch of money. Bring in acrobat guy for cameo. Done.
What works: the movie is visually well done. The elaborate heist plan looks good on film, and you get a bunch of famous actresses to watch.
What doesn't work: Lack of empathy (see above) for any of the characters - I did feel a bit for the insurance investigator, who got more laughs from me than any of the main cast. Watered down, almost non-existant bad guy. Also, nothing ever really goes wrong with the plot - generally heist movies follow the sequence of 'plan, execute, something goes horribly wrong, recover or plot twist to fix, get away with money'. There was none of that twist so the audience doesn't get worked up. There WAS a twist at the end, but it added no emotional impact to the movie other than 'we all get more $$$'.
You might like this if you love heist films and you feel there aren't enough role models for 8 year old girls who want to be criminals, but otherwise skip.
