Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by Jon O — 11 Jun 2018
Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway rock in Writer and Director Gary Ross's reboot.Ocean's 8. Sandra plays ex-con Debbie Ocean, younger sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean in Ocean's 11. Debbie reunites with ex-partner Lou, played by Cate. They assemble their team to steal the $150 million necklace from Anne's vapid Daphne from New York's Met Gala. Glamorous couture and funny smarter than thou vibe, Ocean's 8 entertains.
Sandra is smart and beautiful. Cate is strong and cool. Anne is understated comedic flair. Pull off the impossible jewel heist. Half way through, I thought: Is there more? Fortunately, Sandra and Cate's touching chemistry personalizes. Anne provides the narrative twist. Sandra's strength is her authenticity and heart, which we don't see until the final frames. That's the more. 8 is light clever fun. Though it could have provided more heart in middle, instead of all in the end.
