Review of Ocean's Eight (2018) by James%20 W — 05 Jul 2018
This. This is how you make a contemporary heist movie. Full with a witty script, assured direction and a cast that won't give anything but the absolute best performances. The movie I'm talking about, of course, is Ocean's 8.
Let me elaborate. First, a stylish and witty script. Ocean's 8 is pretty straightforward plot ? Debbie Ocean wants to rob diamonds, and so her and her gang team up to steal the biggest, most expensive diamond of all. But I'm not talking about the plot here; I'm talking about the characterization, the interactions between the characters that make this movie a cut above mediocre movies. Debbie, Lou, Nine Ball, Rose, Tammy, Constance, Amita and even Daphne are well-written characters. They have their own specific roles in the heist, and yet they don't feel one-dimensional. There's this one scene where, before Anne Hathaway's character bursts in, the whole crew's just sitting around and having normal banter. Amita's eating pizza, Tammy's chatting up the others, this was all so good to see, and I think we need more of this in movies these days. Of course, the story focuses on Debbie, Lou and Daphne ? and also Debbie's flirtatious ex and James Corden's character ? but that's just because the heart of the story's between those characters. I love that Ocean's 8 doesn't treat the other characters as simply "other characters".
Second, steady direction. Gary Ross is a name I haven't heard before(although it turns out that I have watched The Tale of Despereaux), but he surely knows how to make things exciting. The movie goes on with a consistently speedy pace, so there's no chance for the audience to get bored. A bustling, exciting score accompanies such a direction and the movie takes off.
And last but not least, the performances. Wow. I just wanna thank everyone involved for giving such amazing performances. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson and Anne Hathaway, you are all so amazing. Thank you all so much, you really did a great job. All these characters are so lovable and well-acted, I can't believe I love them all. Particularly Nine Ball . . . I'm gonna be honest, Rihanna's character is my favorite of them all(although Anne Hathaway's bratty-cute Daphne comes a close second for me). And this wraps up my review of Ocean's 8 ? a great movie that provides a fun time for everyone.
