Review of Obvious Child (2014) by Brian S — 24 Jan 2015
A young woman is dumped by her boyfriend, finds the bookstore where she works is going out of business, goes through a very public drunken melt down during her stand up comedy routine, and then meets a genuinely nice guy, only to find their one night stand resulted in pregnancy, and she is too cowardly to tell him.
It fails horribly as a romantic comedy because absolutely none of it is funny - strikingly, not even her stand up routines in front of an audience (whose laughter is grating because it's so clearly scripted).
She is unable to communicate directly with her love interests but insensitively airs details of her sex life during stand up (while the guy in question is in the audience), making her a completely unlikeable character.
