Another year, another Brooklyn-chic flick (this one on the cheerful topic of abortion no less). First-time writer/director Gillian Robespierre fill her films with idioms that today's lost 20-somethings will instantly relate too, but the real reason to catch Obvious Child is for Jenny Slate.

The young actress is witty and delectable in her lead role (if not quite as endearing as Greta Gerwig in last year's Frances Ha), and definitely suggests a bright career ahead for her. At 83 minutes, Obvious Child is a bit skeletal in some facets, but it's target demographic actually might learn something from it if they pay attention.

This review of Obvious Child (2009) was written by on 18 Jun 2014.
