Review of Obsession (1943) by Jaime D — 29 Sep 2010
The best adaptation of the James M. Cain novel is this outstanding film from Luchino Visconti. A drifter finds himself at a gas station/restaurant. He assists the portly owner of the establishment by fixing his truck - but he always quickly falls in love with his beautiful, younger wife.
This causes complications! The characters are fully realized and feel like they live and breathe. The chemistry between the drifter and the wife is terrific. Visconti, incredibly for the time, does not shy away from homoeroticism.
A truly great example of excellent filmmaking.
