Review of Oblivion (2013) by Jeff B — 17 Apr 2014
I'm not a big Cruise fan, but I do find him a good actor who usually knows how to pick a good script to work with. Oblivion is no exception. This is a fairly well-written and directed film, though somewhat derived.
But it is rather difficult to write sci-fi these days without going into familiar territory. However, comparing Oblivion to Cruises's best sci-fi film, Minority Report, helps one to see just how pedestrian it is by comparison.
But still, a well written film (albeit cliche) with expansive, awe inspiring panoramic shots of Earth, along with great acting, should be able to put it in five-star territory. But it's probably the familiar chill of yet just another dystopia film that doesn't break any new ground that does it in.
