Review of Oblivion (2013) by Joe H — 09 Jun 2014
Oblivion is where you can consign this movie. I'm giving it 3 stars because the FX and the action was pretty sweet. Story, story, story. I should walk around Hollywood with a Citizen Kane screenplay in hand shouting this.
Maybe I wouldn't get arrested. Anyway, I didn't expect much from Oblivion, but wanted to see a fresh sci-fi idea. Jack is a repair man ostensibly waiting for his ticket to one of Jupiter's moons to come in and is sleeping with someone young enough to be his daughter who turns out to be a real live astronaut.
Oh, I'm sorry SPOILERS! Everything is very futuristic, but there are some big machines sucking out all the water from Earth to send to Titan, because of something being wrong with Earth. Turns out there are humans on Earth trying to fight back against superior technology.
They take a page out of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day and blow up the mother ship in the end. You learn nothing about the invaders/aliens other than they are a big upside down triangle with a red eye that makes millions of clones of the people they encounter.
The question left unanswered is what is this alien presence, where did it come from, why is it here, and what happens when it is done. I also really want to know what happens when all the other Jacks meet number 52.
It is also very convenient that the mother ship controls all of its seemingly independent drones and that by destroying the mother ship nullifies the remaining threat. Julia (not a clone) lives happily ever after in the post-apocalyptic simple world we all long for.
