Review of Oblivion (2013) by Lewis E — 23 Nov 2014
'Oblivion' sufficiently sets the mysterious tone and delivers quite a few substantial twists and turns but unfortunately demonstrates no clue as to how to string components together in order to form a coherent and engaging storyline.
The movie is guilty of being too slow and too quick, slow when it is lingering on dull aspects but too quick in its revelations, failing to explain any of them at length or with clarity. Therefore each potential shocking moment which comes as a consequence of a revelation has next to no impact since the viewer is still searching for information. I also continue to find Morgan Freeman hard to take seriously when he is acting his usual smug self whilst rocking funky sunglasses.
A couple impressive action scenes and visuals are present (e.g. rotating ball aircraft), but it is certainly not enough to cover up for all the plot-holes and bad narration.
