Review of Oblivion (2013) by Matt C — 25 Jan 2016
I think if this film was a half hour shorter there is the semblance of a really good Sci-Fi narrative in there, it's not though. It looks amazing, I imagine in the cinema the spectacle of ravaged Earth would really look impressive.
It also borrows a lot of clever ideas from other movies without ever trying to feel like it's ripping them off. Cruise is also as always solidly good, so why doesn't it quite work? Well as I said it's definitely too long, it's a little too unclear what's going on and most importantly for a film which tries so hard to play on the 'love lost' angle it never quite has a heart, you unfortunately never really care about anyone involved.
A real shame because I loved his 'Tron' follow-up but there's still enough here to make me want to see more of Kosinki's films, especially the mooted 'Logan's Run' production.
