Review of Oblivion (2013) by Andrew S — 09 Feb 2014
Oblivion is an underrated Sci-fi film that was very close to being much, much better. Tom Cruise gives a solid performance in a beautifully filmed post-apocalyptic setting. The beginning had a creepy foreboding to it as it showed off the amazing cinematography, and released facts bit by bit about what happened and why they were in this situation.
Then came the clever twist that set the real action going. I think that would have been enough, but there was a second twist that seemed fairly unnecessary for the story. I know the movie was based on existing material, so they may have felt beholden to the story to include everything, however, if you remove the second twist and turn the second Act into a rebellion vs stronger oppressor type movie you would have had a stronger film.
Also, Morgan Freeman's character gives a blatantly obvious bit of foreshadowing half way through that basically spells out the ending for you. Still, it was worth watching, and nowhere near as bad as many critics are saying it is.
