Review of O (2001) by Cal ( — 24 Jul 2007
This contemporary retelling of Shakespeare's play 'Othello' is one of the best of Shakespeare's plays converted to the screen. The modern day story allows audiences to understand the plot of the play, minus the complicated language from Shakespeare's play that no-one understands anymore.
It's very well told as a story about a bunch of teenagers in high school. Odin (Othello) is the only black person in the school and he's exceptional at basketball. He's also dating the prettiest girl in the school.
His friend Hugo (Iago) is jealous, and hence the munipulation that was a key element in Shakespeare's play. Great performances, great directing, this is a film not to be missed. Very interesting if you've read the original play.
