Review of O (2001) by Howard W — 18 Aug 2007
The movie O is based on Shakespeare's Othello, which explores the theme of jealousy, amongst other things. Unfortunately, that's what O often feels like: a deliberately constructed essay on the theme.
The dialogue doesn't seem natural, and the boarding school setting never comes to life. The characters all seem to talk and do specific things as required by the parable - and we end up not really caring about them.
It's all a little pretentious with its voiceover, freeze-frames, and contrived metaphors. Martin Sheen is fatherly and probably the most likable character here.
