Review of O (2001) by Aaron T — 13 Aug 2008
It can be very difficult to properly bring a Shakespeare play to life, especially when translating it to modern day. So far, this is the best modern adaptation of Shakespeare I've seen. Hugo's pain at being the one who is always ignored is made very real and hurts very much. Odin's success and happiness feels so well deserved. Both of those things working against each other make the ending as effective and tragic as it is. The tragic element that Shakespeare wanted, where the love and success of Othello comes crumbling down at the hands of a jealous piss-ant who masterminded the fall only to be brought down with it, is put across as honestly and as painfully as the story needed and deserved.
The movie is not without its flaws, but the overall effect is worthy of being a Shakespeare adaptation.
