Review of O (2001) by Ian C — 18 Aug 2008
Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Soundheim, and Jerome Robbins had a very good idea when they took one of Shakespeare's best known tragedies and updated it so it was about gang violence and racal hated in the west side of New York City.
This movie is an updated version of "Othello" switching the scene from Venice and Cyprus to a prep-school. It's a scary thought if something like this could actually happen at a boarding high-school.
One boy could become so consumed with jealousy that he causes the death of four people. I like this movie except at the end they don't show us what happened to Mike. I think we're supposed to assume that he lives since he was only knocked out and shot in the leg.
In "Othello" [Michael] Cassio is alive and well at the end. I don't remember if Iago kills Emilia but in this movie Hugo does shoot Emily.
