Review of Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) by Kanji — 13 Dec 2017
A riveting art film that leaves me with too many questions. The acting and sound effects are top notch, the narration is stimulating and the subject matter - which is female sexuality - is wonderfully explored through many distinguishable aspects.
However, there are plenty of gaps in how the story is told, some of which leave me unsatisfied and confused. Nymphomaniac does not unveil how the protagonist deals with impending circumstances on a consistent enough basis.
Some of the story-telling also come across as pseudo-intellectual babble, the comparisons made by the deuteragonist being the culprit on most occasions. The mother and father barely develop across the duration of the film as well.
But, Nymphomaniac surely makes for a unique and emotionally compelling watch.
