Review of Nurse Betty (2000) by Stu C — 14 Apr 2008
What a weird little film. I just don't know how I feel about it. The cast are excellent, even the supporting cast are stella, but it really isn't at all how you expect it to be.
I think that the main problem that I had with the film is that I couldn't empathise with any of the characters. Every one of them is messed up in one way or another and only Chris Rock's hard edged hitman stands out as being "real".
That said, even though the whole experience is bizarre and about 30 minutes overlong, it is still extremely compelling to watch. I couldn't step away from it - even though I really wasn't enjoying it.
Don't watch this expecting a rom com - its not particularly funny and I wouldn't say that it's really romantic either. This is more "psychiatric arthouse" with a slightly bigger budget and a cast that it doesn't deserve. I give it three stars (6/10) for the cast and their performances alone - I'm really not sure about the film itself.
