Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Irem C — 25 Oct 2010
-Why couldn't God make me Elvis?
-Cuz he was saving you for John Lennon.
Unlike The Last Station my feelings and thoughts are complately clear about this one. I liked it.
First of all I think I have to say I'm not an expert about John Lennon so I can't comment about the accuracy on the story.
Director Sam Taylor- Wood is interested in capturing Lennon before he became famous as a member of The Beatles. But you never hear that spesific word "beatles". It's a secret between you and the movie.
It shows John's relationships with the two most important women in his young life. His serious and proper aunt who raised him, and his free-spirited mother and the influence of these two different women, along with his new found interest in rock n' roll.
As strong as the film's direction and writing is Aaron Johnson (one of the most promising young actors there is imo) who's portraying the young John Lennon is very inspiring. of course we don't have to say how perfect was Kristin Scott Thomas as his aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff as his mother Julia. Along with these performances I have to talk about Thomas Brodie Sangster's young Paul McCartney performance. I especially enjoyed his acting.
It also has a brilliant soundtrack. A bit mishmash but all good old songs. Good times I assume.
Nowhere Boy is a wonderfully done and surprisingly fun movie that makes you understand and appreciate John Lennon as a man and an artist.
