Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Amilcar A — 30 Oct 2010
I don't get the Beatles or John Lennon. Never have, never will.
Nowhere boy is an interesting movie about perhaps the only chapter in Juan Lennon's life that we don;t already know everything about. The film is focused on a relatively short period of his life where music was more an outlet than anything else.
Poor Juan had to deal with abandonment, tragedy and some very nasty haircuts. At no point would anyone have thought that this man would eventually become one of rocks greatest legends and political activists.
What's interesting about this movie however is that it shows Lennon as a mortal - a troubled, angry and jealous young man. There are no prophetic or messianic moments. It's simply a story about a 17 year old man that happened to be talented and met some other talented people.
Since I don't give two shits about the Beetles or Lennon's music I did not feel the urge to go buy his catalog or to rent Help. I suppose in that sense the film failed.
Overall it's a good story with some moderate learning opportunities.
