Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Devon B — 02 Nov 2010
This was a good movie with a great performance by Kristin Scott Thomas as John Lennon's stern aunt Mimi. It was definitely creepy and awkward, in an oedipal sense. John Lennon was a complicated, emotional guy, and his early life growing up with a confused parenting situation might explain why he was who he was.
The film has an awkward rhythm, and ends abruptly, without really giving any real sense of closure. The best parts of the film are the scenes where young lads from liverpool are getting freaky with girls, and learning some early rock and roll hits on their guitars.
Aaron Johnson definitely pulls off the Lennon attitude, and Thomas Sangster is captures the young innocent paul...but I really wish they went further into the Germany years. Oh well, worth a look if you have an interest in the Beatles.
