Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by M H — 22 Nov 2010
I thought it was a very good biopic about John Lennon. I definitely want to read more about him, and see how much of this true, because his life seemed very interesting and also very sad. But I really liked how the movie played out. Lots of touching moments, sad moments, funny moments. A bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I really felt bad for Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas), it felt like she had had lost so many people in her life. She probably felt very alone. I mean that's what I got from it.
And I thought Aaron was just fantastic in this. Really shone in this. Especially during some of the more emotional scenes like when he finds out about the truth about his father and why his mom abandoned him, and also during the funeral scene. The second funeral scene (To clarify). I will continue to look forward to his work in the future.
And I liked all the musical bits. I wonder if they knew how to play instruments before this movie, or if they all learned last minute for this movie. Because either why they were really good. And although I liked Aaron's singing voice, I thought Thomas Sangster (Paul) had the better singing voice. I was quite impressed, the first time he sings.
And the lastly, I also enjoyed the directing. I think Sam Taylor-Wood did a great job capturing John, as well as the members. The directing isn't something normally I notice first, but I really did here, and I thought it was great. I mean sure, I don't think I could get behind her personally, but as a director I could.
