Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Christopher G — 26 Nov 2010
Nowhere Boy is an excellent film that does a great job of trying to explain the complicated childhood that led to many of the insecurities behind John Lennon's later character and which come through in the lyrics of some of his songs, even when he himself was outwardly acting much more confidently.
The performances from Aaron Johnson (as John), Kristin Scott Thomas (as Mimi) and Anne-Marie Duff (as Julia) are outstanding. I'm not sure how many of the locations used in the film were real and how many were fake, but those *looked* sufficiently like the real ones I saw this Summer that it doesn't really matter.
I watched it on DVD, but from the Film 4 logo on the titles it should eventually appear on TV at some point relatively soon.
