Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Anna C — 29 Dec 2010
For such a cliched coming-of-age story, the execution of it is flawless, making it much more entertaining than it could've been otherwise. Aaron Johnson is great as a young John Lennon, never once crossing the line from performance to impersonation.
The music from the period is great, providing an excellent soundtrack to the film. This really never felt like a biopic, but more like a singular story, not meant to explain the man but rather let you see one important chapter of his life.
What seems most important in terms of storytelling to me is that it seems realistic how John Lennon was able to take one guitar lesson and some poetry and turn it into the greatest rock and roll band of all time.
His relationship with Paul and his first few gigs feel very real and imperfect, something that could've easily been glossed over. Overall I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie, just don't go in expecting more than a coming-of-age story, just one done very well.
