Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Jie A — 22 Jan 2011
Not sure that Aaron Johnson was the right choice to play teen Lennon. I sometime forget that it was him, until someone would say his name.
The story of John Lennon as a teenager is really not as fascinating as one would expect it to be. In fact, he was kind of a sissy little prick boy. That's what they should have called this movie "Sissy Little Prick Boy". This movie is mostly about the friction between Lennon, his estranged mother, and his Aunt Mimi. Also, it's about John Lennon being a sissy little prick boy. Thank god he grew up and stopped being a sissy little boy.
The greater moments of this movie is of John and the formation of The Quarrymen (his band, later to be named The Beatles). But there's a lack of interesting development in this aspect of the film, and the focus always ends up shifting to John's strange life of 2 moms.
I think I'd rather see the story of the second half of John Lennon's life.
