Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Dylan M — 04 Feb 2011
Allow me to start off by saying that I am a big fan of the Beatles as well as a large portion of Lennon's solo work. With that being said, this film interested me quite a bit. I came in rather dubious about Aaron Johnson being cast as a young John Lennon, having only seen him as the lead role in Kick Ass, but by the end of it, I was impressed with his portrayal.
The rest of the cast was... Alright. John's aunt was the only other truly stand out performance in this film. I found the film's representation of Paul to be rather lacking in overall presence, and George Harrison had almost no part in the film as a whole, which made me wonder why they bothered to introduce him as a character at all.
For being a member of the Beatles, you'd think a movie portraying the beginning of the band would have given him a larger part. Now, I understand that this film was aimed towards John's early life as opposed to Paul or George, but I still feel that they could have done more with at least George.
Still, a strong, well done movie to represent 'a day in the life' of a young John Lennon that every Beatles nut should enjoy.
