Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Nat R — 01 Apr 2011
Good biopic of Lennon's early days, with a great performance by Aaron Johnson as Lennon (that's right...the dude from "Kick Ass"). Mining a part of Lennon's life not usually dealt with in depth, this is really a story of John's Aunt Mimi and his mother as they fight for John's affection after the reuniting of the mother and son.
The saintly Julia comes off as a bit of a flake, and Mimi the stalwart, loving mother substitute. The director seems obligated to throw in musical references, even though she is obviously more interested in the son/ mother/ aunt emotional triangle.
Though it plays with chronology a little bit, this turns out to be a charming and engaging little film.
