Review of Nowhere Boy (2009) by Teddy H — 18 Apr 2013
The actors were all great in this film with plenty of depth and feeling...except the protagonist. Aaron Johnson was a little too alpha male, a little too good at looking dramatic. He could cry on command and portray the suave rock star John Lennon became, but not what made him the controversial, unapologetically intuitive questioner he was remembered for.
Johnson needed a little more madness, he needed to become vulnerable to his audience, but it just felt like he did what the director told him to and that's missing the entire point of Lennon's significance.
The actors who played his mother, aunt and Paul McCartney definitely had more depth and draw, but our protagonist here could not command his audience, or rather let them in. The story was informative if anything but failed to distinguish the mystique of Lennon from other celebrity musicians, like so many on the cover of Rolling Stone.
