Review of Now You See Me (2013) by Dan F — 28 Jun 2014
Leterrier gets lost in trying to prove he's more than an action director as the film is buried in its own conceit of misdirection (for the right way to tackle that, see The Prestige) and the film's central cast translate the smug self-satisfaction that they've achieved something great when, actually, they've created a fun mystery- albeit an often silly one.
The finest sequence in the film goes to Dave Franco, in a remarkable cat and mouse scene which further reinforces how good Leterrier is at kinetic action; though this may not be what the director wants you to come away from the film thinking.
Great cast, but far too full of self-appreciation to really work- reinforced by the grand staging and score that alludes to something far more magnificent.
