Review of Now You See Me (2013) by Jim H — 03 Jul 2014
Slick, interesting if not totally unrealistic caper that is able to use enough bells and whistles to overcome a rather thin development of any of its characters. It's fast â" moving pace keeps your interest going, even while you're not quite sure of what just happened in part six of the story while you're watching part seven.
The casting was very hit-and-miss, Ruffalo is very strong as the title character (no explanation why Jesse Eisenberg is listed as the top dog here), and Freeman and Caine are, well, Freeman and Caine.
The magicians â" most notably Eisenberg, who is terribly miscast as a "confident" magician/player, but never stops being his usual mumbling, quivering self â" are all pretty unmemorable, but that's not completely their fault, since the script takes absolutely no time to develop them.
They're here, they're gone, and that leaves the rest of the cast to chase after them. You follow along rather well until the muddled finish (which is unrealistic, but this is an unrealistic film, remember?), but overall, it's a good watch.
