Review of Now You See Me 2 (2016) by Wesley B — 24 Jun 2016
The first film was a charming caper flick that might not reach Sting levels of twistiness, but still piled on loads of charm, much of it the winning performances of a stars in b roles. As formula...Now You See Me 2 still has the charms, but can't feel nearly as fresh.
That's probably ok given a tightly wound plot and much the same cast (most will likely accept the lazy, if necessary, substituting of Lizzy Caplan for Isla Fisher, since both seem to be a pale copy of Emmy Rossum.
..don't ask me). But the sleight of hand only goes so far, and daddy issues can't cover a lingering central soullessness in this exercise. Stretching this out for a third run seems like a stretch.
