Tessa is not a likable character and her relationship with her family and friends is not an easy one to understand. She is dying and instead of helping the people that are about to lose her she makes their lives miserable and herself in the process.

In the very end she has changed, but that is really only because she has to face the reality of her demise much earlier than anticipated which shocks her out of her bad behavior.
