Review of Novocaine (2001) by Tim W — 19 Sep 2004
[FONT=Tahoma]This movie was very strange. It was alright though. I like Steve Martin usually. In this movie, he's a dentist who gets involved with a patient, even though he's engaged, and ends up with all kinds of problems.
The ending is either unpredictable or totally predictable, and I don't usually try to guess what's going to happen because I feel like that kind of ruins a movie. I mean sure it's fun sometimes but I usually just try to sit back and watch.
So I didn't see it coming, per se, but I wasn't too surprised considering there weren't too many options to guess at. Helena Bonham Carter was a convincing druggie, and I admit I liked her clothes (for the most part).
But I can't fathom Steve Martin's character's attraction to her. Laura Dern got to be a little annoying toward the end. Elias Koteas, I didn't really feel like I got to know his character, but this movie seemed to go on subtle hints, ie if it dropped a hint, you know exactly what's coming.
The guy who played Carter's brother was definitely a convincing asshole, and his demise couldn't come too soon. So, if you like weird movies with weird characters and semi-attempts-at-twists in plot, you'll like this one.
