Review of Notting Hill (1999) by Daniel K — 09 Oct 2010
4: This is the way romantic comedies should be made. It is quite excellent and definitely one of the best from the last ten or twenty years. I can come back to it again and again and never grow tired of it.
The scene tracking through the changing seasons is terrific as well. Roger Michell is an extremely solid British director. Anyone with Persuasion, Notting Hill, and Venus as a part of their filmography should be able to die happy.
Roberts does her job quite well and Hugh Grant brings his classic movie star charm once again. He is one of the stars most like those of classic Hollywood (i.e. Stewart, Grant, Peck, etc.) in that he has a definite persona that he can stick with time and time again that never seems to get old.
I only wish there was a different film with Emily Mortimer as the love interest. Julia Roberts' smile at the end is spectacular. I always look forward to it immensely. I can't help but think that the film had a significant effect on Roberts' life as she ended up marrying the nobody and apparently living happily ever after.
