Review of Nothing to Lose (1997) by Cal ( — 19 Dec 2007
'Nothing to Lose' is a very enjoyable and hilarious buddy comedy from writer/director Steve Oedekerk, and it is worth seeing. The film is sort of a cross between a comedy and an action movie and, quite surprisingly, the two work well when mixed and the film is an absolute hoot.
Nick Beam (Robbins) believes his life could not get any worse when he catches his wife in bed with his boss. On the road he feels pretty depressed, then carjacker Terrance (Lawrence) gets into Nick's car.
Nick, because he was in such a bad mood, drives all the way out into the desert with terrified Terrance beside him. The two then realise that they are both in the same boat; they have nothing to lose, and so they become reluctant friends.
What follows is a series of robberies in the lead up to the ultimate revenge plot; stealing all the money from Nick's boss. As well as this, another pair of robbers pursues Nick and Terrance for infringing on their territory.
After a hilarious first half, I started to lose interest in the second half until the great ending came around. 'Nothing to Lose' is quite a funny and enjoyable flick. Recommended.
