Review of Nothing Like the Holidays (2008) by Kathleen W — 15 Dec 2008
Enjoyed it; but probably only because I'm familiar with the ethinic background and culture and food. Otherwise; the main plot (among about 3 or 4) really was contrived to the point of WTF?
SPOILER :
You have the matriarch who thinks her husband is having an affair, so she announces she's divorcing him on Christmas.what th patriarch is keeping from her is that he's actually seeing his doctor because he's got cancer is going to die. He thinks its better for her to divorce him and die than keep the family together and happy in his remaining time. WTF?????? He thought this would be a better way???
There's of course the typical 2-girls-in-the-bedroom-singing-and-dancing scene; and I must NOT be latino because apparently what movies tell us is that every latino and black person knows someone caught up in gang shit. Yes, it exists; but I dont have to see it in every damn comedy or drama. Some of us actually get up, go to work, come home, and just live normal lives w/o worrying about who's on the corner and what they did to "mi hermano".
So, unless you're a) hispanic or b) want to see Debra Messing pop and lock to 80's rap music (why do I find her stunning)? - skip it. Seems the rest of the country wants to watch a bad white trash movie like 4 Christmas's anyway. US likes white trash. See: most NBC comedies.
