Review of Nothing But the Truth (2008) by Prachi P — 19 May 2009
"Nothing but the Truth," is based on real events, it has been adapted into this fictional story-I do wonder why the makers of the film didn't just go ahead and make a kind of bio-pic about the real reporter, Judith Miller.
That is really besides the point though as the film is able to stand on its own and the ending gives the audience a sense of real credibility to the story had we not had the real-world base. Kate Beckinsale, really trying to make herself known as an actress, is doing a great job of it-she plays Mrs.
Armstrong with a fire and a determination to stick to her guns and, in the end, not allow herself to look like as horrible a person as she may feel. The supporting cast is great as well, Dillon, Bassett, Wyle and Schwimmer all give strong indications of what these characters have to do with Rachel and how they affect her life and the outcome of her situation.
I especially enjoyed the performance by Vera Farmiga, she showed a strong yet broken woman who loses everything and still holds her composure. The shot in which she is *spoiler alert* killed is one that left me breathless.
Give credit to director Rob Lurie for that and a handful of other creative moving cameras that show us only half of what we want to see and leave much to our own mind. Lurie also gives the film a great pace-it never drags though it is easy to see how it could have-we, as the audience become more and more involved every minute and by the end we are irritated wiht the predicament but we understand where both sides are coming from-we see how the rights in this country are in a battle with one another to see which can find the more solid ground to stand on.
There are some great points given by both sides, making it ever the more tought to figure out what the "truth" is.
