Review of Nothing But the Truth (2008) by Nick S — 12 Jun 2009
Based on a true story (look it up, it's an interesting one), Nothing But the Truth centers around a journalist, played at an Oscar-calibre level by the beautiful Kate Beckinsale, who outs a CIA agent but refuses to reveal her source.
This is a powerful, thought-provoking film that tackles numerous ethical issues within the world of journalism, politics, and the law. The cast, from the main players on down, is magnificent. This isn't the kind of movie you would expect to get just a limited release.
So limited in fact, it didn't play in any Canadian theatres. It's DVD release in May was the first chance we had to see it, and I recommend you pick it up as soon as possible. The story, albeit true, is unique and sophisticated, almost reminiscent of something like All the President's Men.
The writing is captivating, but doesn't become preachy or convoluted, which it easily could have. Rob Lurie hasn't made many movies to date, but let's hope this isn't his last.
