Review of Nothing But the Truth (2008) by Adam W — 23 Jul 2009
Rod Lurie has crafted another well thought out and powerful film about dirty politics and the harsh realities that exist in a world that is dominated by the media, the other being The Contender. At its most basic level the film is about sticking to your principles, but there doesn't seem to be any reason for Kate Beckinsale's character to do so outside of it being the right thing.
By not giving up her source in her story to the federal government she looses everything and seems to gain nothing other than a moral victory and even that seems worthless. Lurie does not make it a film about easy solutions.
Unlike his previous film, The Contender, the grand speeches people make in Nothing but the Truth do not almost nothing. The film was sadly lost in the shuffle of late 2008/early 2009 film when it did not deserve to be.
The performances really make this film especially Vera Farmiga and Matt Dillon who excel here. Try to find the film and watch it.
