Review of Nothing But the Truth (2008) by Jonathan B — 22 Aug 2011
I'm bumping this film again because of how criminally overlooked and underrated it is. Inspired by the Valerie Plame story, it's very interesting on how it deviates from what actually occurred and how it takes a look at First Amendment issues from both a journalistic and governmental viewpoint.
The cast is excellent, with Kate Beckinsale delivering the biggest knockout of her career worthy of an Oscar, and Vera Farmiga's spunky turn is also worth paying attention to. The writing dives into arguments that don't have easy answers, mostly sticking to matters of principle rather than uncovering the layers of corruption Fair Game was so adept at, all the while utilizing a very personal story arc.
Above all, Nothing But The Truth gets you to think and hopefully sparks a discussion, and really that's all any great film can hope for.
