Review of Nothing But the Truth (2008) by Samitha G — 05 Aug 2012
Nothing But the Truth boasts a great script and some great performances. The cast is terrific and Rod Lurie's script navigates the political waters of a journalists right to protect their sources even when it is against the interests of national security.
While Lurie is clearly on the side of the journalists and not the government, he manages to give both sides a voice. The result is not so much a conclusion to this debate, but a presentation of facts to allow a dialogue to begin.
Add in the shades of gender dynamics and roles within society, and the result is a film that exposes huge inequalities and contradictions within our societies beliefs, but at the same time acknowledges the reasons for their existence.
Overall the film is about finding and maintaining ones core beliefs regardless of their compatibility with others because in the end that's the only way that you can live with yourself.
