A taught story of how two deeply flawed women forge a destructive relationship based on ones sheer stupidity and the others manipulative nature. Judi Dench plays possibly the most monterous character in film since Hannibal Lector and plays the role perfectly.

The sort of mad, cat obsessed harridan that you really don't want living next door. Cate Blanchett is equally well cast as the naive, self-pitying young teacher who brings her own world crashing down by instigating the scandal of the title.

The movie deals with complex issues in a sparse, economical manner, allowing the story to unfold before the viewer with the inevitability of a slow motion car crash. Gripping viewing.
