Review of Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037 (2007) by Carl G — 22 Nov 2007
A humanistic film that celebrates the skill and integrity of master craftsmen and bemusedly admires the estheticism of great pianists.
I'm a sucker for music performed on film and for those through-the-polka-dot-door scenes where people build amazing things step-by-careful-step so I rate this film highly.
Perhaps one fault of the film is its "narcissism of small differences". When all of Steinway's pianos are more sonorous and consistant than the pianos of earlier eras does it really make sense to emphasize or even "spiritualize" individual pianos and to insist that hand-craftmanship is thereby required? It is a lovely idea - even a parable for the value of individual human lives in a mechanized and standardized age - but is it the last word?
