Review of Not One Less (1999) by Chris R — 05 Apr 2008
This is a simply beautiful movie. A perfect example of the 'a good movie is good not by what its about, but by how its about it' - a synopsis of the events would make it sound small and boring, but it is this wonderful and perfectly straightforward narrative which makes it so remarkably powerful. I love movies which can make you weep not with sadness for the characters, but with sheer joy at their tenacity and humanity. Not One Less is filled with this stuff of life, little moments of subtle beauty which don't try to crowbar feeling from the situations.
The main character, the 13 year old girl substitute teacher is one of those performances where it looks like the director has seen something in what may be a first time actress and allowed those qualities to shine through on film.
Eye opening about modern China and also superbly life affirming - because its the human touches of faith, trust and commitment which are so wonderful to behold, whether on screen or in your day to day life(especially there).
A wonderful happy ending movie, which gives you plenty of room to breathe and take in the stark reality of these childrens lives, but still lets you feel real hope. Lovely.
