Review of Not One Less (1999) by Michael H — 09 Nov 2008
A more personal film for Yimou, in the vein of his later films Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (excellent) and Happy Times (not so much) about a young girl called upon to teach a village school after their teacher leaves to take care of his mother.
When one student disapeers, she must bring her students together to bring him home. It's a genuinally emotional film without relying on sentiment, relying on non-professional actors a la Neo realism and Robert Bresson, that hits its mark often and superbly.
The final scene in particular is genuinally moving.
