Review of Not Cool (2014) by Robert G — 22 Sep 2014
To appreciate this movie, one must understand Shane Dawson's audience, the YouTube generation. The audience is comprised of a generation that is lost, with each member trying to find their own voice through the internet. One generation filled with 15-25 years olds who are either depressed, narcissistic (which every generation is accused of) or lost due to no direction (due to no encouragement from prior generations and very littler preparation for the mess they are handing to this new generation of lost youths).
This movie is a comedy for that generation. One for the narcissist updating their instagram or facebook every day. One for the kid sick of their hometown, looking for any silver lining. One for the virgin, unsuccessful in their pursuits of losing their label. One for the person that revels in absolute comedic absurdity, bred from the hybrid of "National Lampoon" antics and "In Living Color" low brow humor. This movie is on the pulse of the "YouTube" generation, as they can find themselves in these characters Shane Dawson has wonderfully crafted. That is the true beauty of #NotCool.
