Review of Not Cool (2014) by Erin S — 17 Mar 2015
Reviews of this movie surprise me with their harshness. I thought Not Cool was a funny, occasionally heartfelt movie. The acting overall was mediocre but tolerable, though acting of directer Shane Dawson, Michelle Veintimilla, and Drew Monson was pretty good.
It also has a nice soundtrack and a feel good vibe to it, which I enjoyed. However, I found the protagonist 'Tori' to be a little too unlikeable. You can make cynical charming in some ways, but the script for her didn't even come close.
The movie is raunchy, controversial, and very inappropriate, but as a teenager in 2014, I wasn't too fazed by much. I believe I am the target demographic and I did indeed enjoy it. I will say that if you are outside this small demographic, it's very likely that you won't enjoy this movie, and I would absolutely not blame you.
If you are also easily offended, or even moderately easily offended, this movie will most certainly offend you. I believe Dawson set out to make a movie that would be enjoyed by his fans from YouTube, and he did that.
Critics hated it, understandably. I think he will have a good career ahead of him, but only time will tell if he has the versatility he needs.
