Review of Nostalgia (1983) by Mariarita M — 27 Oct 2007
Another Tarkovsky! For this amazing post-formalist director the story is not fundamental! It's the 'signified' use of the film formal aspects. Eg. Nostalghia, revolves around a vertical and horizontal perspectives obtained with a clever use of mise-en-cache and extreme long takes respectively! This technique, which is peculiar to his ability to sculpt the time, is reminiscent of the limps of the cross as a sacred symbol that permeates the whole film.
Moreover, and personally, I was astonished by the way in which he creates a sort of superimposition that is the delayed recognition of the real image, a mixture of places forgotten, but still in the back of the protagonist's mind, and my beloved Tuscany (Bagno Vignoni Spa, San Galgano Abbey) and Lazio (Campidoglio)! Great!!!
